The Thompson Falls Eastward Extension Trail is a community-led infrastructure project to create a safe, ADA-accessible multi-use trail connecting the west and east ends of Thompson Falls, Montana. Currently, pedestrians, cyclists, and mobility device users face significant barriers due to the layout of MT Highway 200, the railroad, and the Thompson Falls Reservoir. This project will provide a non-motorized route linking key community destinations—including the only grocery store, healthcare facilities, parks, and downtown businesses—by constructing an asphalt trail and elevated boardwalk. Building on a completed feasibility study, the $17,750 project budget will progress planning through our next two tasks: permit assessment and survey. These tasks are essential before further engineering and design can take place for the trail. This budget allows us to work with contractors who will help us secure necessary permits. They have advised this be done before further planning is completed.
The Eastward Extension Trail will strengthen economic growth, transportation options, and tourism in Thompson Falls. By connecting commercial areas, recreational parks, and residential neighborhoods, the trail improves access to local businesses and services for all residents, including those who are elderly, low-income, or without access to a vehicle. The trail will encourage foot traffic downtown and support recreation-based tourism, aligning with the community’s goals to revitalize the economy through outdoor access. It will also increase transportation equity and safety by providing an alternative to walking or biking along a high-speed highway with no shoulders.
